How to Buy a Neck Orthopedic Pillow

By William

Everyone knows that we spend approximately one third of our lives sleeping. Therefore, it’s more than appropriate to look for solutions that will allow us to have a healthy and comfortable sleep. The orthopedic pillow helps us relieve the tension and the pain during our sleep or rest. As I wrote in my previous posts, there are many types of orthopedic pillows, each of them designed to support a specific part of our body: head, neck, back, knee or the entire body.

A neck pillow is an orthopedic pillow created for neck support and spinal alignment. It’s also named neck support pillow, contour pillow or cervical pillow.

The design of the neck pillow shouldn’t influence its therapeutic properties, so choose the shape that looks better for you, according to your individual taste. What IS important is the support they provide for your neck, at the same time holding the spine in a neutral position.

There are many kinds of designs available as well. Some neck pillows are wave-like, others have a special ‘pocket’ for the head. As far as their material is concerned, there are fiber neck pillows, water filled pillows, foam pillows, buckwheat pillows and so on. I would recommend trying the fiber filled neck pillow first – it has an average firmness, not being too hard or too soft.  With a fiber neck pillow you’ll have a pleasant sleep and a good neck support at the same time. Synthetic fiber is also hypoallergenic and doesn’t hold the dust like regular feather pillows do.

The foam neck pillow is also a good option, though many people find it too hard. Water pillows are as well a matter of particular choice – for some people they may be the ideal solution, while for the others they’re not appropriate.

In order to find the neck orthopedic pillow that will be the most helpful in your particular case, do some research before buying the product. You’ll find many pillows available on the online market – choose the one that meets all your needs by its price, quality and specific features. Some neck pillows have special applications like preventing headaches or snoring, others relax the tensed muscles etc. Remember that a quality product will have a detailed instruction, describing the exact purpose of the neck pillow and giving specific indications on how to use it efficiently.

Don’t forget about your usual sleeping position when buying your neck pillow. How do you prefer to sleep – on your back or on your side? The neck orthopedic pillow has to support your neck’s natural curvature when you sleep on your back and align your spine when you sleep on your side.

You should also remember that your orthopedist’s advice is one of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a neck pillow. After exactly diagnosing your problems, he/she will suggest how you can improve your condition by using an orthopedic pillow.

Consider your size as well for choosing the most appropriate neck pillow. If you are very tall or too small, or if you have a shorter neck, a standard pillow may not provide a good support. Even worse, an inappropriate pillow can force your neck into an incorrect position.

Before buying an orthopedic pillow, first make sure that it fits your neck and then check if it matches the design of your bed :) .
