The Bed Rest Pillow – Relax Without Deforming Your Spine!

By William

Doesn’t it feel tempting to lie down most of the time? Lying down in a semi-reclined position could really be comfortable for people who want to sleep, read a book or watch the television, among others. But when we lie down, it does not always automatically mean that we are relaxed.

Sometimes, without our knowing it, we still suffer from unwanted pressure and different muscle strains when we lie down, most especially if we do not have the proper support for our lower back. It happens because more often than not, when we decline on our back too much, our spinal column is being subjected to an awkward position. For instance, when you work in front of your computer while slightly lying down on your back, you tend to push your neck forward, putting all the pressure down to the lumbar region of your spine. Your spinal column loses its natural curvature and this, therefore, strains the lower back. This is the major cause of back pain and strains.

In order to correct the body’s posture while still keeping the person in a semi-reclining position, therapists suggest the use of a bed rest pillow. This pillow, also sometimes called a bed recliner, is specifically designed for people who like to lie down on their lower back.  Do not be fooled by its name, though. Although the name of this pillow has a bed in it, it is not meant for bed use alone. Such a pillow allows its user to sit upright in the bed, on the couch, in an armchair or even in the car! It provides comfort and support while the person is reading a book, watching the television or sleeping without hurting his back and straining his spinal column. This is the very reason why this cushion is already considered an orthopedic pillow.

Finding a good bed rest spine support pillow on the market is not so difficult. Various types of such pillows thrive in stores nowadays. More often than not, a bed rest cushion may be a pillow with armrests, or it could be a simple wedge pillow with a little modification to provide better support for the lower back.

wedge bed rest orthopedic pillowA wedge bed rest pillow has a shape of a triangle. Normal wedge orthopedic pillows may be used under the back or under the legs. But a wedge bed rest cushion is specifically designed to keep the body in an upright diagonal posture from the waist up to the neck.

bed reclining pillow with armsA bed recliner with arms, on the other hand, is a bed rest pillow that has armrests on both sides. In this way, the user can relax his arms when he is using the cushion. Most types of bed rest pillows come with armrests because they are more preferred by consumers.

However, there is also a bed rest pillow without arms. As compared to the bed rest pillow with arms, this cushion is cheaper. It only has a backrest that supports the back of the user but not his arms. This is useful for traveling or for office usage since it is less space consuming.

Some of the bestselling bed rest spine support pillows are the Cordoroy Bed Rest Pillow, the Cotton Twill Bed Rest Pillow and the Plush Bed Rest pillow. A bed rest orthopedic pillow usually costs between $20 to 35$ depending on the brand and the type.

If the pillow seems a little expensive for you, you can sew your own bed rest pillow. Instructions regarding this matter are provided on the Internet. You may also simply use a pile of pillows to support your back. However, an orthopedic pillow made by a trusted manufacturer will definitely provide the best support that your back needs to avoid pain and discomfort.
